Questions

Electric service

There are power lines at the road. Am I set?

Not necessarily. Those lines belong to whichever utility built them and may be serving other properties across an easement. What matters is which entity holds certificated territory for your parcel.

Who builds the meter loop?

Generally the property owner, through a qualified electrician, built to the serving utility’s specification. The utility inspects and connects.

Why can’t I get a firm price for electrical?

Because the specification differs by utility and the cost depends on distance and route from their facilities. Both are site-specific.

What is a line extension charge?

What the utility bills you to bring facilities to your property. They typically provide an allowance and charge the balance. On a rural parcel it is often the largest single electrical cost.

Can I get temporary power while building?

Often, though it varies by utility and county. Worth asking early because it keeps work moving.

What service size do I need?

It follows the calculated load, not the square footage. Account for a well pump, a shop or a future addition now — upgrading later means rebuilding the service entrance.

Still have a question?

Call and ask. We would rather answer it now than have you find out the expensive way.
